Master's student position
Are you interested in studying Honeybee Breeding and Genetics?
Where: Federal University of Technology - Paraná (UTFPR), Campus of Dois Vizinhos, Brazil.
Application deadline: November 4, 2016
Research project: Design of Breeding programs for several traits in Africanized bees Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae).
Our goal: To establish strategies that enable the implementation of breeding programs of the species, as well as personnel training. We prioritize the actual control of genealogies through instrumental insemination and also a rigorous data collection during the generations of selection.
What we have done: Since 2010, our work has been focused on studying the queen’s weight at emergence as selection criteria for honey production and how it reflects the development and behavior of the castes. We have been carrying out studies on planning, data collection, genetic evaluation, and application of the results in commercial beekeeping. This allows the students to have an intensive hands-on training in the whole honeybee breeding process.
What we offer: Courses focused on methods for genetic evaluation and estimation of genetic parameters. The Animal Breeding Research and Education Unit in our university is equipped with an apiary, instrumental insemination and biological dissection laboratories.
If you are interested in joining our team, please send your CV to Dr. Fabiana Costa Maia at firstname.lastname@example.org by October 28, 2016.
