13.3.1. Determining mating flight periods
Daily mating flight periods of drones can be easily monitored by observing the flight activity at the hive entrance by a person with a watch and a tally counter. The number of leaving drones per minute gives data on time of beginning, peak and cessation of drone flight. Further counting is useful for records on the influence of weather conditions during mating flights. This simple method indicates the chances to do experiments on a DCA. It can be performed in any country and is even useful to prove differences in flight times of races and species, especially when they occur sympatrically.
