9.4. Other observation hives
Observation hive studies are not limited to honey bees. Bumble bees can be kept in a wooden cube with a transparent top for easy viewing (Jandt and Dornhaus, 2009; Jandt et al., 2009). Many species of ants can easily be kept in wooden, glass or plaster nest boxes with transparent walls or tops (Holbrook et al., 2011; Sasaki and Pratt, 2011; Schneider, et al. 2011). Polistes wasp nests can be placed in wooden boxes with wire mesh fronts (Liebert et al., 2010). With access to a basic wood shop and a bit of creativity, the behaviour of hundreds of eusocial insect species could be observed using an observation hive in a controlled laboratory setting.
