Indication costs.  € 200 (including hotel double room, welcome drink, social dinner, 2 lunches and coffee/tea, exclusive travel costs)

Objective
Sharing knowledge about vitality parameters of honeybee colonies e.g. mean hemolymph proteins, vitellogenin, SHP, physiological parameters e.g. ovary and fat body development. This in order to make a start establishing parameters and evaluating the impact of parasites, diseases, foraging conditions (environment) and insecticides on colony vitality.

Relationship to other activities: establishment and validation of methods to assess honey bee vitality and health at individual and colony level. Development of a “toolkit” to determine the colony vitality as result of parasite infestation, feed / environment, diseases, (chronic) exposure to pesticides

Relationship to objectives: standardization of colony vitality parameters 

The workshop will focus on three themes: 
Theme 1. Assessing vitality of individual honeybee workers 
Theme 2. Assessing vitality of a honeybee colony
Theme 3. Factors underlying vitality of a honeybee colony 

Presentations. 30 minutes (20 minute talk plus 10 minutes discussion)

Number of talks and posters: Maximum 16 talks in total.

Dear colleagues,

It is a pleasure to invite you to the COLOSS workshop “The future of brood disease research – guidelines, methods and development” which will be held April 10-12, 2011 at the University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Science, Institute of Agriculture and Ecology, Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark.

 The meeting will focus on the etiology and pathogen-host interaction of bacterial and fungal honey bee brood diseases.

Only a limited numbers of attendants can be considered since many previously invited speakers already accepted and the maximum number of participants is small (≈20). Active contribution is required for all attendants. Please send in your abstract for evaluation as soon as possible (using the template) to eva.forsgren@slu.se (deadline 01.03.2011).

Confirmation of acceptance based on the evaluation of the abstract as well as more detailed information about accommodation and scientific programme will be sent out in the first week of March.

Please remember that travel expenses only will be reimbursed by COLOSS

Scope of the Conference:


The main objective of the Global Conference on Entomology is to showcase
advances in entomological research and development in the insect world.
The skills and knowledge of entomologists are needed worldwide helping
farmers to produce crops and livestock more efficiently through sound
pest management strategies, fighting to save endangered species and
fragile ecosystems, and preventing insects from spreading agents that
cause serious diseases.

Insects provide a readily accessible resource for you to use in
developing a better scientific understanding of the world around you.
For more than 350 million years, insects have evolved and adapted to
become the creatures we know today. Through the millennia, insects have
become an essential part of every terrestrial and freshwater ecosystem.
They are the most numerous and diverse form of life on Earth. About one
million species are known, and it is estimated that 10 million are
undiscovered. The study of insects helps us increase the bounty of the
land and preserve its natural beauty. It also helps us understand how to
protect lives and property from harmful insects. Food shortages still
exist in many parts of the world. About 40 percent of the world's food
production is lost to insect pests each year. Sound entomological
research and extension programs are at the forefront of the sciences
involving these important problems. Although reducing vast insect-caused
losses will not automatically solve the hunger problems - other economic
and cultural factors are important too - entomology is a central part of
the solution. Vast areas of the world are dominated by insects that
transmit parasites that cause yellow fever, river blindness, Chagas
disease, and sleeping sickness. Malaria, plague, and tick-borne fevers
are diseases of worldwide importance, and entomologists lead the way in
research to combat these ailments. Entomologists are seeking new, less
expensive ways to prevent these losses.

The scheduled conference organized by the Century Foundation, Bangalore
in association with other organizations will provide a scientific
platform to exchange the information on the recent advances in
entomological research and to bring together the International
scientific community involved in the study of insects.

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to the COLOSS Work Shop "Honey bee vitality and diversity - status of the GEI experiment and the subspecies discrimination methods comparison" which will take place during the period 1 - 3 March 2011 in the Biological Faculty of the University of Plovdiv “Paisii Hilendarski”, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Co-organizers of this event will be the National Bee Breeding Association, the Agrarian University – Plovdiv and the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria – Plovdiv.

The winter workshop of the WG4 will focus on the draft for international breeding recommendations and the online database. During the meeting, exchange of samples and reference material, as well as discussions on the status of the GEI experiment and the subspecies discrimination methods comparison are planned.

Please send your registration details to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evgeniya Ivanova (geneiv@uni-plovdiv.bg) as soon as possible (deadline 25.01. 2011). The number of participants who can be reimbursed is limited to a maximum of 15 persons with ticket price not more than 200 – 270 Euro. Preference will be given to persons who actively contribute to the work of WG4.

As each participant needs to contribute to the program, please let us know the title of your presentation or your discussion issues (individually or in groups) and also send your abstract, using the related form.
