Following arrival in Italy of the small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) an exotic honey bee parasite listed in the OIE, COLOSS is calling a workshop to focus on the problem. The aim of the meeting is to develop a strategy to limit the dispersal of and damage caused by this beetle in Europe.

The meeting is composed of a scientific workshop which will be held on February 19th 2015 and of an extension day (not open to COLOSS members due to space limitations) dedicated to an Italian audience of invited beekeeper representatives, policy makers, health authorities and scientists, on February 20th 2015.

The workshop agenda will focus on current knowledge on Aethina tumida and how this may be used in the present situation. In the first part of the workshop, colleagues who have been involved with this honey bee pest will share their experiences. In the second part of the day, the two pressing topics of “monitoring and diagnosis” and “prevention and control” will be discussed.

We invite all members to bring ideas to participate in this discussion! At the end of the day COLOSS will produce recommendations for research and policies.
