Varroa destructor is a damaging parasite of honeybee colonies. If left untreated, commercial colonies normally die within a few years. Varroa has developed resistance to several synthetic acaricides and any chemical treatment may lead to the contamination of honey and other bee products. Beekeepers increasingly rely on alternative treatments incorporating essential oils and organic acids. Varroa are the main impediment to profitable beekeeping worldwide. It is also known that some A. mellifera honeybee populations coexist sustainably with Varroa without any chemical control. Honey bee colonies resistance could be studied and applied in beekeeping practice in the future.

The objectives of our Varroa Task Force in COLOSS and the forthcoming Workshop will be to evaluate the Varroa control strategies and practices in different countries, together with people involved in research and with extensive experience in this topic. Our knowledge of and practice with Varroa control strategies, as well as conducting colony resistance programs, are crucial for successful colony management, survival and production. Additional studies on Varroa control and colony resistance development are needed.  One of the aims of our Network is also to boost research in these areas and to help beekeepers increase colony survival.

The main aims of the Workshop:

1     To present and discuss research and applied methods on Varroa control, including colony resistance programs,

2     To discuss the control methods in different countries for a common publication,

3     To harmonize potential methods for common experiments,

4     To incorporate harmonized methods in our current Varroa control strategies, and

5     To discuss future collaborations and Task Force organization (chair - spokesperson) within COLOSS.
